Phonetics and Phonology in Europe 2023

Welcome to the Phonetics and Phonology in Europe 2023 which took place from 2 to 4 June 2023 in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. The theme of PaPE 2023 was 'Speech Variation in the Wild'.

PaPE 2023 was the fifth conference of the PaPE series, following conferences in Barcelona (2021), Lecce (2019), Cologne (2017), and Cambridge (2015). PaPE is the successor of PaPI, a series of biennial Phonetics and Phonology in Iberia conferences which started in 2003. PaPE 2025 will take place at the University of the Balearic Islands in Palma de Mallorca, 25-27 June 2025, with Maria del Mar Vanrell as Chair of the Organizing Committee.

PaPE is an interdisciplinary forum for research and on all areas of phonetics and phonology, promoting discussion of speech approached from multiple perspectives: neurolinguistics, psycholinguistics, computational linguistics and speech technologies.

At the end of PAPE23, the following junior researchers were given awards for their presentations: Jian-Leat Siah (UCLA, LabPhon Award for best oral presentation), Omnia Ibrahim (Saarland and Zürich, LabPhon Award for best poster presentation), Hyunjung Joo (Rutgers, Organizers’ award for best oral presentation) and Sarah Wesolek (ZAS, Organizers’ award for best poster presentation).
