Tutorial: Text analytics meets phonology.

Written data is relatively easy to gather, but difficult to analyse when our object of study is phonology (e.g., grapheme-phoneme mismatches, opaque stress in orthographic forms, etc.). The goal of the present workshop is to demonstrate how common techniques in text analytics can be adapted to make written data more useful in phonological analysis. We will focus on two fundamental tasks that can be easily generalized to participants’ own projects. For both tasks, R will be used, and some basic knowledge of the language is expected. First, we will compile a small corpus from raw scanned text (i.e., an image of typed text) by using object character recognition (OCR). Second, we will organize our data (tidy data concept) and create different phonological variables that will allow us to analyse phonological patterns of interest.
